Shooting in nature always delivers an epic surprise and my Mountaintop Wildflower Brand Photography with Adventure Elopement Make Up Artist, Meaghan Whalen of Black Fern Beauty Co. turned into an absolutely stunning afternoon.
Our Back Story
In 2021, I had the privilege of photographing an incredible Scottish Highlands elopement-style vow renewal. This adventure elopement was unforgettable, made even more special by Meaghan from Black Fern Beauty Co. Unlike most adventure elopement make up artists who finish their work and head home, Meaghan strapped on her boots and ventured into the rugged landscape with us. She became a second pair of eyes, ensuring Sam and Brian looked their best while fully immersing herself in the adventure.
Meaghan and I had an immediate connection from the start. In Scotland, we discovered our shared preference for diving deep into meaningful conversations over surface-level small talk. So, when she reached out about doing a brand shoot, I was thrilled by her vulnerability. She admitted that she had never done a brand shoot before and, like many, found being in front of the camera uncomfortable. Even though I’m an adventure and Washington Elopement Photographer, branding photography inspires me so much because helping people feel safe and authentic in front of the camera is a core aspect of my work.
A Glimpse Into Our Session
We made a plan and met on a Monday afternoon for our adventure. An hour and a half drive up a rugged, washed-out road took us to one of my favorite trails in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. We spent several hours hiking through a sea of wildflowers, talking about the expansive mysteries of life, and collaborating whenever inspiration struck. Watching Meaghan slowly open up and find comfort in front of the camera was incredibly inspiring and I feel that what we created together beautifully captured her essence as a woman and a brand.
Branding shoots are about capturing the essence of an individual in the most authentic, natural, and raw way possible. Authentic brands are magnetic, yet being truly oneself in a world that often celebrates a false sense of identity is a challenging journey. This type of work deeply fulfills me and inspires me to serve more people in this way.
